INSTAREBLOG: The Noops have totally rewon my affections with Together. I’d given up back around Twin Cinema …
As I told someone the other day, when people ask me what I’m into these days, I say “Everyones old new record” — The New Pornographers, LCD Soundsystem, Goldfrapp, Spoon, The National, Ted Leo & Rx. A lot of bands I’ve championed for nearly a decade (!!!) are really hitting it out of the park after some missteps over the past few years. Why the fuck would I want to listen to some crap a kid made on their computer that I could also easily make on ON MY COMPUTER WHILE STONED ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON? Give me some quality, geez.
Last night after the midnight movie I treated myself to a taxi ride. My driver was this hilariously old white haired man with the sweetest disposition.
I can't decide if I like these guys or not; their other track "Can't Bribe God" left me a little unfazed but by the third listen of this one I have to admit I was a little swayed by the limped 70's swagger. Plus the intro gave me a little chuckle.
"Obviously it’s kind of funny and part of me just thinks ‘come on don’t be anonymous’. It’s quite easy when you’re anonymous, it’s a lot harder to actually do things in public and front it out. This is a problem I have with the internet in general, a lot of the comments are made anonymously and I just think you can sneer at a lot of people doing stuff but they’re putting their name to it and they’re going out in public with it." -John Savage
Last night I hosted an accidental spontaneous party and Love of Diagrams came up on my computer from a mix a friend made me some time ago [thank you!]. It was a pretty big hit and made us stay up that much later.
They remind me a lot of Blondie. By the way, Debbie Harry singing in Spanish? Delicioso!
So me and my friends are doing another cd swap and I think maybe, just maybe, I might have to include something from these guys. They've been making an increasing appearance in my daily playlist.
Like her or not Joanna Newsom certainly has an opinion and isn't afraid to express it. This pretty much made my morning.
My problem isn’t actually with Lady Gaga. But there’s not much in her music to distinguish it from other glossy, formulaic pop. She just happens to wear slightly weirder outfits than Britney Spears. But they’re not that weird – they’re mostly just skimpy. She’s fully marketing her body/sexuality; she’s just doing it while wearing, like, a ‘fierce’ telephone hair-hat. Her sexuality has no scuzziness, no frank raunchiness, in the way that, say, Peaches, or even Grace Jones, have – she’s Arty Spice! And, meanwhile, she seems to take herself so oddly seriously, the way she talks about her music in the third person, like she’s Brecht or something. She just makes me miss Cyndi Lauper.
On Madonna:
I think maybe she doesn’t hold her money very gracefully, the way some people can’t hold their drink.
This is so sad. I've postponed blogging about it in the hopes it was all a cruel joke but no, White Rose Movement has officially called it a day; not because of problems between bandmates like egos or drugs but because of stupid fucking record release funding and bureaucracy.
The artist always gets lost in the politics. So pissed. It's a shame they weren't able to release their completed sophomore album before giving up the ghost. I still remember listening to Kick for the first time. LOVE. Finn Vine had the best boots, Owen Dyke the best hair and Taxxi was just adorable- music crushes for ever.
